It helps no one, if someone, in a position of leadership, dwells on the past, and the good – old – days, doing little more than making unrealistic comparisons, and/ or blaming and complaining, rather than proceeding, to do what’s best and needed, for the sustainability of his organization! The songwriter, Paul Simon, in his song, Kodachrome, put it this way, Everything looks worse in black, and white. However, it is interesting to note, as Mr. Simon got a little older, he often, changed the lyrics, and changed, the word, worse, to better! The reality is, it’s not true leadership, until/ unless, the over – riding focus, and priority, is looking, and moving FORWARD, in the most relevant and sustainable manner. This article will, therefore, briefly examine and discuss, using the mnemonic approach, what this means, represents, and why, it’s so essential and important.

 

1. Face facts; future:

How can anyone leave his group stronger, and best prepared, for the challenges and needs, of the future, unless, he begins his objective examination/ observation, in a realistic manner, where he faces the facts, learns from them, and proceeds accordingly?

 

2. Options; opportunities:

Never believe it’s good leadership, to possess a My way or the highway, manner and attitude! One must be ready, willing and able, to carefully consider and evaluate the options and alternatives, and choose the best path of action, which will maximize the potential, and opportunities!

 

3. Relevant; realistic:

Merely looking busy, does not equate to actually leading! Rather, it is essential to provide relevant leadership, which focuses on needs, concerns and priorities, while being realistic, etc!

 

4. Worthwhile; worthy; when; what:

What good can one do, unless he prioritizes worthwhile, meaningful, relevant leadership? Why do you believe, you might be worthy, of being a true leader? Will you ask yourself, when you must proceed, and what, you hope to achieve, and accomplish?

 

5. Attitude; attention; action:

You’ll never inspire others, unless you consistently maintain a positive, can – do, attitude! What will you focus on, and commit the majority of your attention? Will you carefully consider needs, concerns and priorities, develop a meaningful strategy, and conceive and perceive of, create, develop and institute a relevant, action plan?

 

6. Relevant; reliable; responsive:

One will only make a meaningful difference, for the better, if he proceeds forward, and provides relevant leadership! You must be, both, perceived as, as well as, actually, a prepared, reliable leader! Proceed with insight and empathy, and be responsive to what your group and stakeholders need, and deserve!

 

7. Delve deeply; deliver:

Fully consider your options, by delving deeply, into your choices and alternatives! What differentiates a real leader, from a pseudo – leader, is consistently delivering on your promises, in a focused way!

 

One can either proceed FORWARD, and make a difference, for the better, or dwell on the past, and serve no useful purpose! Are you up to the task?
